How to build an institution<\/h6>

<\/p>

We are looking into the lives of four jazz musicians from Greece and the UK and how the inherent universality in the experience of being a musician blends with the unique traits of one\u2019s heritage.  <\/p>

We explore how early life experiences shaped their musical identity and how society nurtured it (or not\u2026) further. Uncomfortable truths and realities, stereotypes, sexism and the colonization of music are discussed. By sharing their experiences, we\/they hope to learn from each other. <\/p>

Pospo (Dr Sotiris Posporelis) <\/strong>is a Consultant Liaison Neuropsychiatrist at King\u2019s College Hospital London and a Hon. Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience. He loves the Brain and thinks that many people take it for granted\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also loves music and many other things that may seem irrelevant but are somehow connected. Most importantly he finds it extremely interesting that he writes this bio for himself using the third person\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early on, he decided that the world doesn't need another untalented guitar player, though deep inside he still believes he can make it... <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has been dj-ing for over twenty years (opening for the likes of Bonobo and Quantic), attending every possible concert under Mars, amassing a massive amount of vinyl records and an equally massive debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together with his best friend, he owns and runs the independent vinyl record label Fair Weather Friends Records<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hutchings was born in 1984 in London. He moved to Barbados at the age of six, began studying classical clarinet aged nine, graduating to tenor saxophone which has been a regular sight across London and the UK since his return aged sixteen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the Caribbean diaspora, he sees his role as that of pushing the boundaries of what musical elements are considered to be Caribbean. Constantly evaluating the nature of his relationship with musical material and tradition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hutchings has three primary projects \u2013 Shabaka and the Ancestors, Sons of Kemet and Comet is Coming. Between them, Hutchings has gathered a substantial number of awards and nominations, including winning the 2013 MOBO \u2018Jazz Act of the Year\u2019, winner of the 2014 Paul Hamlyn Composer Award, 2015 Jazz FM Awards \u2018Instrumentalist of the Year\u2019, 2016 Mercury Music Prize nomination, 2017 Jazz FM Awards \u2018UK Jazz Act of the Year\u2019, 2018 Jazz FM Awards \u2018Jazz Innovation of the Year\u2019 and a 2018 Mercury Music Prize nomination. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shabaka continues to sit outside the box, interested in the undefinable gaps and going beyond jazz. To date, Hutchings has released to critical aclaim 8 studio albums and 3 EPs, alongside featuring on several other albums with highly respected artists. Saxophonist, composer and multi-wind instrumentalist Tamar Osborn<\/strong> is the creative force behind
modal jazz ensemble Collocutor (On The Corner Records), having so far released three critically
acclaimed LPs and an EP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is also a long-standing member of the Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra, and collaborates
regularly with Sarathy Korwar, Ill Considered, Jessica Lauren, Emanative, DJ Khalab and more.
Tamar has been a professional freelancer for 20+ years. A background in both classical music and
jazz, and an interest in learning about other musical traditions and cultures, have enabled her to
work in many different contexts around the world: touring internationally with contemporary\/Indian
classical dancer Akram Khan\u2019s \u2018Xenos\u2019; London productions of the FELA! musical (National
Theatre, Sadler\u2019s Wells); improvising alongside DJs; working with artists as diverse as Kelis, Rhye,
Tanmoy Bose, and the Africa Express project with Tony Allen, Fatoumata Diawara and Batida
amongst others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Composing for Collocutor in particular has allowed her to bring together these many varied
experiences, and explore commonalities and meeting points between different traditions and
genres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As \u2018Tamar Collocutor\u2019 she also hosts a monthly Soho Radio show exploring her musical interests
and influences, and interviewing musicians and others involved in the industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
