Innovation and the law: Where to move fast and when to stop

From Napster to YouTube and TikTok, music innovation has often moved ahead of licensing, forcing the industry to respond and adapt. Now gen AI platforms such as Suno and Udio are testing the boundaries again, from how training data is sourced to how outputs are created, attributed and monetised within existing copyright frameworks.

This discussion looks at where that line sits in practice. When does moving fast help define what comes next, and when do you need to stop and put the right permissions in place first? How do founders, creators and rights holders navigate that tension, and what separates ideas that evolve into viable, licensed models from those that run into problems?
