Metadata Madness: The Importance of Metadata in the Digital Music Industry
Data has become a fundamental source of competitive advantage in music in the digital economy. The existing problems related to licensing and royalty payments are caused by the fact that works and rights holders are often not being properly identified in the digital environment. Metadata is the oil that makes our industry spin. It’s at the very core of the music industry: when metadata is not correct, artists and songwriters miss out on royalties, and songwriters and engineers don’t get the credit they deserve. Collaboration and data exchange capabilities between different stakeholders have evolved from a dream to a crucial part of the business, to ensure global rights and royalty flows. The players who offer metadata and rights management services for the music industry have expanded from traditional players like CMOs to IMEs and to a wide variety of commercial players. In this session, we will have a crash course on the basics of music metadata, discuss about latest advancements in rights and metadata management and what concrete steps are being done in the business to overcome challenges, which have existed for a long time. Adoption of your innovation or creation isn’t guaranteed just because you made a great product. It doesn’t mean the industry will care. You may have objectively solved a business problem, or created great art, but the key to success is quite possibly hidden in other factors: community, hype, who-you-know, etc. This workshop will not talk about your widget or music. Rather, we will talk about taking it out into the world where it will live or die. How do you become a part of the community you are targeting? What are some strategies to promote and sustain engagement amongst peers, investors and customers? Drawing upon the expertise of experts, as well as your own knowledge and experience, how can you devise effective strategies to achieve your goals? And what are some of the understandings and techniques which steer successful projects? What tips a project into failure? Ο συντονιστής της συζήτησης επιλέγει 10 τραγούδια από την εγχώρια ελληνική και διεθνή μουσική σκηνή. Οι επαγγελματίες των μουσικών ραδιοφώνων ακούνε για πρώτη φορά, ένα-ένα τα τραγούδια και μετά από την ακρόαση του καθενός τραγουδιού συζητούν αν τους κινητοποιεί και γιατί, αν εμπίπτει στο επαγγελματικό αισθητήριό τους, αν θα το επέλεγαν να το συμπεριλάβουν στις λίστες του ραδιοφώνου που εκπροσωπεί ο καθένας και αν θα μπορούσαν να προβλέψουν την εμπορική τύχη του.
Ταυτόχρονα το κοινό μαθαίνει από ενεργούς ραδιοφωνικούς επαγγελματίες μέσα από τη συζήτηση πώς αποφασίζουν ότι ένα τραγούδι μπορεί να γίνει επιτυχία ή όχι, πότε επενδύουν σε ένα τραγούδι και σε έναν καλλιτέχνη και ποια είναι τα κριτήρια ραδιοφωνικής μετάδοσης ενός τραγουδιού.
